1969 Chevelle Wired with Infinitybox

Here’s another great customer car wired with our Infinitybox system.  Matthew W sent us these pictures of his finished 1969 Chevelle.  He’s had this 1969 Chevelle a long time.  This is the first car that he ever got to change a tire on.

He has a 383 stroker engine in it with Aluminum heads.  It is fed through an Edelbrock dual quad carb set up.  He has an MSD ignition box giving it spark.  He has the Vintage Air Front Runner system with their Gen-IV system.

He wired the car with our Infinitybox 20-Circuit Kit.  He added inLINK for security features.  He also add inRESERVE to manage his trunk-mounted battery.

You can see this picture of his rear POWERCELL and the inRESERVE solenoid protecting his battery.  The rear POWERCELL is mounted conveniently in the rear, right corner of the car.  This is very accessible if he needs to change a blown fuse, the runs of wire are short and it can be hidden neatly behind the custom trim piece that he made.

Splice Saver Front with Cover

There are lots of different places in your car’s harness where you need to take a single POWERCELL output and splice it to go to different outputs.  Our new Infinitybox Splice Saver Kit gives you a very easy way to create a robust and reliable junction point in your wiring harness. The Infinitybox Splice Saver Kit gives you an easy way to connect multiple accessories to a single POWERCELL output.  Examples include powering your ECU, gauge power, stereo power and A/C power from a single ignition output.  Other examples include lighting, locks and stereo power.  You can power 5 separate wires from a single input wire.  The internal buss bar can be split to create two separate circuits, each with a single input and two outputs.  We also include 3 cavity plugs to seal any unused outputs.

The Splice Saver uses the same sealed 280 Metripack terminals and cable seals that are used in the POWERCELL and inMOTION output harnesses.  The kit includes all the components needed to build a sealed junction point for your wiring harness.  It also includes a mounting clip for a clean install in your harness.

Just like any other job on your car, you need the right tool for the job.  We recommend using the correct crimp tool to properly install the terminals on the end of the wires that are going into your Splice Saver Kit.  This picture shows a picture of a good quality crimp tool designed for the Delphi/Aptiv 280 terminal.

We put together a few good examples of how the Splice Saver Kit can help you simplify the splices that you need to make in your cars wiring harness.

The first example is wiring your Ignition power.  The Ignition output on your POWERCELL is going to power everything that needs key-on power in your car.  Primarily, this is going to power your coil, ignition box or ECU.  You may also need key-on power for things like your radio, heating & air-conditioning system, gauges and transmission controller.  The splice saver will take in your Ignition output and distribute it to these multiple electrical systems.  Check out this picture to see how you can use the Splice Saver to simplify your Ignition wiring.  You can down load this diagram as a PDF by clicking this link.

 

Wiring door locks is another great example of where the Splice Saver Kit can help clean up your wiring.  You have one set of outputs on your inMOTION cell that need to go to the door lock actuators on the driver and passenger side of your car.  You can split the buss bar of your Splice Saver Kit in half, which gives you two separate circuits for the lock and unlock outputs on inMOTION.  This picture shows the details.  You can download this diagram as a PDF by clicking this link.

Wiring the front parking lights in your car is another great place to use a Splice Saver Kit.  You first need to take the POWERCELL output for the parking lights and split that to go to the lights on the left & right side of the car.  You also need to tap into this parking light output to get power for your gauge illumination and for any other accent or trim lights you may have in your car.  This picture shows how you can easily do this.  You can download this diagram as a PDF by clicking this link.

You can do something similar for your high beam wiring.  You need to first get the output from your front POWERCELL split to go to the left and right high beam bulbs.  You also need to tap into this circuit to power the high beam indicator on your dash.  A Splice Saver Kit can make this very easy.  Wiring the high beam bulbs and the indicator on the dash doesn’t use all of the outputs on the Splice Saver Kit.  We include cavity plugs that you can use to seal the open circuits to keep water, dust and dirt out.  Check out this picture for more details.  You can download this diagram as a PDF by clicking this link.

The wiring for your turn signals in the front of the car is another great place for a Splice Saver Kit.  Just like the door locks, you can split the buss bar on the Splice Saver to get two separate circuits.  These two circuits can be used to easily get you access to the connections you need to get your turn signal indicators on your dash.  This picture shows you the details.  You can download this diagram as a PDF by clicking this link.

Your rear parking lights and brake lights wiring are another good example.  You can split the buss bar to get two separate circuits.  Then you can use the Splice Saver Kit to connect the POWERCELL outputs for the rear parking lights and brake lights to the bulbs on the left and right side of the car.  This picture shows the details.  You can download this diagram as a PDF by clicking this link.

MASTERCELL Error Log

Our Infinitybox system is full of tools that help you wire your car or truck faster.  There are troubleshooting and diagnostic features built in that tell you simply what is going on in your car.  This link will take you to our Troubleshooting and Diagnostic manual.  This blog post covers the most sophisticated of the troubleshooting and diagnostic tools in the Infinitybox 20-Circuit Kit.  The MASTERCELL is always watching the critical parameters for the POWERCELLs and inMOTION cells that are attached on the Infinitybox CAN network.  The MASTERCELL Error Log holds any records of problems with these critical parameters and lets you easily access them for advanced troubleshooting.  This may sound really complicated for a wiring system used in hot-rods and resto-mods, but this powerful tool lets our technicians help you when things aren’t working correctly.

Each of the cells in the Infinitybox system monitors their own health.  Every second, they tell the MASTERCELL how they are doing and report if they’re having any problems.  If there are problems, they are kept in the MASTERCELL Error Log.  You can easily access the MASTERCELL Error Log by simply pressing the “HOME” and “SCROLL DOWN” buttons under the inSIGHT screen on the MASTERCELL.  You press these two buttons at the same time, hold them down for one second then release them at the same time.  After you do this, the MASTERCELL will display any errors that it recorded on the inSIGHT screen.  The MASTERCELL can hold 8 errors in memory and displays them in order.  This video will show you all of the details about the MASTERCELL Error Log.

There are three key values that are important to the Infinitybox system.

The first is battery voltage.   The system needs a minimum voltage to operate safely.  This is set at 7 volts.  There is also a safe maximum operating voltage.  That is 20 volts.  If your MASTERCELL or POWERCELLs measure their input voltages outside of this acceptable range, they will record it in the error log.

The second critical parameter is temperature.  Each Infinitybox cell has a temperature sensor built onto its printed circuit board.  If the temperature of that board exceeds a safety limit, the cells report it to the MASTERCELL and it is stored in the error log.

The last critical value is for the POWERCELL.  It is what we call the Charge Pump Voltage.  Every POWERCELL board has a part of its circuit called a Charge Pump.  It does what the name implies.  It pumps up charge to safely turn on and turn off the MOSFETs that control the POWERCELL outputs.  If the charge pump voltage falls below a set level, the POWERCELL sends a message to the MASTERCELL and this is recorded in the error log.

As we mentioned earlier, the MASTERCELL Error Log is an advanced diagnostic and troubleshooting feature built into the Infinitybox system.  It is rare that errors occur.  You are probably never going to need this feature.  It will help our team get your system going if you do have problems with the Infinitybox system in your hot rod, street rod, kit car, restomod, race car or Pro-Touring build.

1955 Cadillac DeVille- Great 8 Winner

Congratulations to Frank Hinmon for being a Great 8 Winner at the 2020 Detroit Autorama.  Frank and his team have put a ton of effort into this car to make it the best and it shows.  In addition to making it to the Great 8 at the Detroit Autorama, his car was one of the Select Six at the Chicago World of Wheels.

The car is an engineering masterpiece.  It is full of detail.  They started with a 2-door and re-engineered it to make it a 4-door.  From there, the paint, the interior, the engine, the chassis are all integrated seamlessly to create this Great 8 Winner.  Check out this video to see the full details.

Frank wired the car with a complete Infinitybox system including our 20-Circuit Kit, 2 inMOTION cells, inTOUCH NET, inRESERVE and inVIRONMENT.

Beyond all of the body modifications and mechanical details in the car, this is a complicated car, electrically.  Using the Infinitybox system made creating a complicated wiring system very easy.  The car was wired with off-the shelf components from Infinitybox and configured through software to do what Frank wanted it to do.  The distributed architecture of the Infinitybox system made the runs of wire short and kept the bulk of the harness to a minimum.

Frank has inTOUCH NET as part of this system so he can control the entire car from his iPad tablet or a touch screen head unit mounted in the dash.  His windows can be controlled from the iPad so can the door poppers.  This also includes using our inMOTION motor controller cell to raise the hood and the trunk by pushing a button on his tablet.

We also customized the system to manage his fuel tank controller.  Frank has two different fuel tanks: one for pump gas and one for racing gas.  He has a special valve that flips between these two different tanks and their fuel pumps.  By using outputs from one of his inMOTION cells, we control the actuator that flips the valves between these two tanks.

The power, flexibility and versatility of the Infinitybox system gave Frank the control he needed to wire this winning car.  The entire Infinitybox team is proud to be a part of this project.  Congratulations again to Frank for an award well deserved.

We had a chance to wander thorough the 2020 Autorama at Cobo Hall in Detroit.  It was full of some amazing automotive engineering.  One of the best cars there was built by Chris Walker and his team at Premier Motorworkz in Louisville, KY.   They built this exceptional 1968 Camaro called Dementor.

The engine is a 6.2 liter LSA paired with a 6-speed automatic.  The exhaust is a piped through a Varex Variable Exhaust system.  The interior is spectacular and was done by Sewn Tight Custom Interiors.  The car is a slick silver with flake and a ton of pearl, all from House of Kolor.  It absolutely pops in the sunlight.

Chris wired the car with our 20-Circuit Kit, inMOTION, inRESERVE, inTOUCH NET and inVIRONMENT.

Chris mounted the front POWERCELL next to the driver’s core support under the hood.  This makes all of the wires going to the front of the car short and simple to run.  The rear POWERCELL and inMOTION are in the trunk.  The MASTERCELL is behind the dash, just forward of the head unit.

They are controlling the car primarily from the customer’s phone using inTOUCH NET.  They also have a head unit in the dash that gives them complete control of the car from the touch screen.  This includes controlling all of the functions of their Vintage Air Gen-IV with our inVIRONMENT module.

We worked with Chris and his team to customize the code on his Infinitybox system.  We’re controlling the headlight covers from inMOTION when he turns the headlights on and off.   We also customized his system to control the motors for this exhaust system so he has manual control.  We also tuned the way his interior and accent lights work.

Recently, ScottyDTV did an interview with Chris covering the car at the 2020 Street Rod Nationals in Louisville, KY.  You can see the video of the car below.

20-Circuit Kit Power Up Video

This blog post has a simple video that shows you what to expect on your Infinitybox MASTERCELL when you power up your 20-Circuit Kit.  The Infinitybox system is full of simple tools to help you troubleshoot and diagnose your electrical system.  You can download a complete troubleshooting and diagnostic guide by clicking here.

This video shows you the start up messages that you will see on your MASTERCELL inSIGHT LCD module.  It also shows you the different indicator lights on the MASTERCELL and describes what they mean.  This video also shows you how to take an inventory of all of cells connected to the MASTERCELL including your POWERCELLs, inMOTION Cells, inVIRONMENT and inTOUCH NET.  By simply pressing the HOME button on the MASTERCELL, you get a real-time confirmation that the MASTERCELL is communicating with all of the accessories in your system.

Our Infinitybox system plays nicely with any other electrical accessory that you would want to install in your hot rod, restoration, resto-mod, street rod, kit car or pro-touring build.  This blog post is going to cover the Digital Guard Dawg PBS II wiring.  It will show you how to connect the PBS II push-button start PKE module to your Infinitybox 20-Circuit Kit.  This gets you the passive keyless entry features of the Digital Guard Dawg PBS II paired with the power and flexibility of the Infinitybox system.  We have blogged before about wiring their iKey system into our Infinitybox system.  You can see that post by clicking this link.

Before you go anywhere, it is very important that you thoroughly read and understand the manual for the Digital Guard Dawg PBS II.  You can access that by clicking this link.  Once you are familiar with their instructions, it is time to get into the Digital Guard Dawg PBS II wiring and the Infinitybox system.  This blog post is only going to cover the connections between the PBS II and the Infinitybox system.  Follow their instructions for all constant power and ground connects.  Also follow their instructions for wiring their push to start button and their training button.

The PBS II will give you passive keyless entry (PKE) capability for your car.  As you approach the car, the PBS II system detects the presence of the key fob in your pocket.  It engages the ignition and lets you start the car.  The PBS II connects to the MASTERCELL of your 20-Circuit Kit and replaces the need for a traditional ignition/start switch.  This diagram shows the necessary connections that you need to make.

The PBS II will send the signals to the MASTERCELL for the ignition and the starter.  When the MASTERCELL sees these inputs turn on, it will send the required signals to the POWERCELLs to power your ignition and starter outputs.  The PBS II wires for the ignition and starter are positive signals.  The MASTERCELL requires ground triggers for the inputs so you will need to wire in our inVERT Minis to buffer their positive signal.  You can learn more about the inVERT Mini and purchase them at this link.  The diagram above shows where to put the inVERT Minis in the circuit.

The PBS II also needs a signal to know that you are stepping on the brake pedal.  This signal must be positive 12-volts.  Since our MASTERCELL inputs work by being triggered to ground, you cannot get this positive brake signal from the brake pedal switch directly.  You need to get this from the POWERCELL output for the brake lights.  You can simply splice into the brake light output on the rear POWERCELL.  Alternately, you can use an OPEN output on the front POWERCELL as the brake pedal trigger.  You would wire the corresponding input to your OPEN output to the brake pedal switch, in parallel with your usual brake light input.  Doing it this way keeps the run of wires in the car short.

The PBS II also has provisions to control door locks and trunk poppers.  If you purchased inMOTION for your Infinitybox system, you can wire the MASTERCELL inputs for your door locks to the Unlock and Lock signals on the PBS II Accessory Harness.  We recommend using a diode to isolate the MASTERCELL from any stray voltages that may exist in the PBS II.  This diode should be a 1N4001 and must be oriented per the diagram above.  These inputs will not work if the diodes are installed incorrectly.

The PBS II also has provisions to control a trunk popper from their key fob.  You can take any of the OPEN outputs on your rear POWERCELL to control you trunk popper.  You would wire the corresponding MASTERCELL input to the white Trunk wire in their accessory harness.  Just like the signals for the door locks, we recommend isolating the MASTERCELL inputs from the PBS II with a 1N4001 diode as shown in the wiring diagram.

Here’s another great example of a customer car wired with our Infinitybox system.  Paul L. wired this beautiful 1970 Mustang with our 20-Circuit Kit, inLINK and inMOTION.  Paul just sent us pictures showing off the finished car and how he installed his Infinitybox system.

This picture shows the center console of his car.  You can see the MASTERCELL and the inMOTION cell located in the frame of the center console.  The MASTERCELL connects to all of his switches.  The inMOTION cell controls the motion of his power windows and door locks.

You can see in this picture how seamlessly these cells disappear into the interior of the car.

He relocated the battery to the trunk of the car.  He used this space for his ignition system and his front POWERCELL.  This POWERCELL location is great because it makes most of his front wiring short and easy to install.  His headlights, high-beams, turn signals, running lights, starter solenoid, ignition power, cooling fan and horn are all powered from this location.

His rear POWERCELL is located in the trunk.  This makes wiring his brake lights, turn signals, rear running lights, fuel pump, trunk popper and other accessories very easy.

We did some simple customization of this code to get him extra features.  He’s controlling his door locks from outputs on inMOTION.  His doors lock and unlock when he enables and disables security from his inLINK key fob.  He is also using a POWERCELL output to operate a solenoid to pop his trunk.  We programmed a button on his inLINK key fob to pop the trunk.  He also wanted an output on his rear POWERCELL to turn on with ignition.  These are all very simple changes to our system.

POWERCELL

Our 20-Circuit Kit is the core to the electrical system in your car.  It is more than just a wiring harness.  It is a universal wiring system that gets you the most advanced, functional and reliable electrical control on the market.  The 20-Circuit Kit starts with our MASTERCELL, which connects to your switches.  It also includes two of our POWERCELLs, which we call the muscles of your system.  The MASTERCELL sends commands to the POWERCELLs to locally power your lights, ignition, starter solenoid, cooling fans, fuel pumps, horn and other accessories.  We’ve talked about the MASTERCELL in more detail in a recent blog post.  You can link to that here.  This post is going to cover more details about our POWERCELL.

The 20-Circuit Kit includes 2 POWERCELLs.  Each POWERCELL can control 10-outputs.  One POWERCELL is for the front of the car, the second is for the rear of the car.  The front POWERCELL is set up to control your headlights, high-beams, turn signals, front running lights, horn, cooling fan, ignition power, starter solenoid and dash power.  The rear POWERCELL is set up to control your rear running lights, turn signals, brake lights, fuel pump, back-up lights, dome lights and other accessories.

Connecting your loads to the POWERCELL is very easy.  You run the output harness from the POWERCELL to your light, fan, pump or other accessory.  You cut our universal harness to length.  You connect our output wire to the wire on your load.  That’s it.  Click on this link to get more details on connecting your POWERCELL outputs to the electrical loads in your car or truck.

You put the POWERCELLs in the car were you need them.  This lets you eliminate size and weight of the wiring harness in your car.  The installation is simpler because the runs of wire are shorter and troubleshooting is easier.

The POWERCELL is a remote fuse and solid-state relay box.  The fuses that you need to properly protect your wiring harness are built into the POWERCELL.  You do not need to add separate fuses.  Also, the solid-state relays that control your loads are built into the POWERCELL.  Each output can carry up to 25-amps continuously so you do not need to add external relays to control your lights, fans, pumps and other accessories.  Also, we don’t use mechanical relays in our POWERCELLs.  Our outputs are controlled by solid-state MOSFETs.  This are rugged and reliable and give you tons of benefits over traditional relays.  Check out this link to learn about some of the advantages of a MOSFET.

You can easily add extra POWERCELLs to your 20-Circuit Kit if you need to expand the output capacity beyond 20.  Each additional POWERCELL gives you 10 more outputs to your Infinitybox system.  The POWERCELL kit includes the POWERCELL plus all of the harnessing required to connect to your existing 20-Circuit Kit.  You can learn more about the POWERCELL kit by clicking this link.
